Sports Background: Played baseball as a youth. Dabbled in surfing during my teen years. Got into competitive powerlifting in my 20’s. Won 2 Gold Medals and 1 Bronze Medal in the California Police & Fire Games in the Mens Open 165lb weight class.
Softball History: Started playing league nights after work. Thought I could rely on my baseball experience to be a good softball player. After many frustrating seasons I finally learned that I had to practice at it and play often to get better. I currently play one night a week and a civilian tourney whenever I have the time.
Current Police Team: THE SoCal Alliance/Easton (2001-present)
Past Police Teams: Tustin Sticktime (1998), Newport Beach Combo (1999-2000)
Proudest Moment in Police Softball: On the field I am very proud of all the Alliance team accomplishments. We won 3 tourneys in a row this year (2006) which is impressive considering there are many good teams that have never won a single tourney. But some of my proudest moments have also come in defeat. Going into foreign lands and playing our hearts out in Dayton is one of those moments. I felt we were playing for more than just our team, we were playing for the pride of the entire W/C circuit. Although we only finished 4th, I believe we represented well. Also, winning the bronze (also known as losing the silver/gold) in Vegas this year was another proud moment at the hands of defeat. We played 11 games in the Vegas heat with exactly 10 healthy players and we faced some of the toughest competition in the circuit game after game. We were on the verge of being 20 run-ruled by Hawaii in the semi-final game and we almost came back and won. Although we were beat down like dogs early, we played with heart and walked off the field with pride. UPDATE: New PROUDEST MOMENT will be our 2007 team accomplishments. 59-5 on the year. 6 tournament wins. WORLD CHAMPIONS!
Off the field my proudest moment is a no-brainer. It was the sense of satisfaction I felt after my partner Del and I hosted the first annual Policesoftball.com World Series. Bringing everyone together from coast to coast is quite an accomplishment and seeing all that talent at the same venue was very impressive. Wait till you see what we have in store for you all this year! Also, when I look at the website and realize what a great thing that Del and I have created. To think it all started at a burrito stand while working the graveyard shift.
Lowest Moment: It is reoccurring but fortunately it happens with less frequency now than in past years. It is those isolated times when I lose focus of what cop softball is all about. I let my personal performance or the result of game get me down and spoil the journey.
My Game: I wish I had the wisdom I have now with the body I had 10-15 years ago. At 39 I don’t consider myself old, but I am a few steps slower, the reflexes aren’t quite as fast and it definitely takes me a few more days to recover after a tourney. But, I am also a smarter player. I am fortunate to play with some teammates who really do know the game and I have learned more from them in the past 2 years than in the previous 10. I used to blindly focus on pounding the ball, driving home runs and gunning out runners on the base paths. I now try to focus on situational hitting, drawing walks, hitting to all fields, splitting runners, and doing what it takes for the team to win.
Future Goals: Continue to promote our sport through the Policesoftball.com website and through Softball Magazine where I dabble as a contributing editor. I want to continue to improve as a player and get out and meet some of the great people I have come to know through the website.
My Motto: “Those of us with who lack the natural skills have to compensate by trying harder.” |
