Sports background:
Playground baseball as far as I can remember, no high school or college ball. Right into Softball at 15-16 years old. Followed my big brother around getting a swing now and then. Learning the game the old fashioned way.
Softball history:
Filled in for a missing player back in 1977 at age 15. Couldn’t hit that huge ball out of the infield for the life of me. Took several years of adjusting from hardball to softball. I was fortunate enough to have good guys around to teach me the game the way it was suppose to be played. Softball became a staple in my life after that allowing me to make more friends and memories than I can even remember.
Past Police Teams:
I have played for Wayne Oakland since 1988 when I was contacted by Dennis Mckee and was asked to join the squad. I took over the team in 2001 when Dennis retired from police Softball after 29 years of running the team. I have filled in on the Jax team and the Columbus team in a couple tourneys. It is a great honor to be respected enough by other teams and players to be asked to join them for a weekend of softball……even as old as we get.
Proudest Softball Moment:
Probably my best “moment” like a few others would be being selected to the Dayton’s First Team Silver Anniversary team. To be recognized by such a large group was quite an honor. Another moment (actually two that are connected) is being the last team to have beaten Jacksonville in the early 90’s ( Weekend of Hurricane Andrew..no relation) when they went on their first tear of the LESA circuit, then being the first team to beat them breaking their streak in Nashville a year and a half later.
Lowest moment:
Like it was yesterday, a virtual unknown by the name of Dennis Leonard hit a 302ft fly ball to left field in the Detroit Classic in the late innings of the “IF” game. I was at the fence and started what needed to be a small jump to catch the easy fly ball. Anyone who has played at softball City in Detroit knows the shape of the fences (rival only to Dayton‘s dugouts). As I started what was to be a phenomenal game saving catch, the top of the fence gave in and the ball barely made it over the fence for a home run. We went on to lose the game like 10-6, and Jax went on to run the tables the next 2 years. After the game, I traded Jerseys with the guy only known as “That 612 guy from Orlando”.
I still have the jersey, which is probably his first jersey he received as a Jacksonville player and will gladly send it off to Cooperstown for the future Hall of Famer. (To be posted next to my knee pads of course)
Future Personal Goals In Police Softball:
As I type this I am saying I want to back off from the game in one respect but with all that this sport has given me and now the resurgence that PS.COM has offered, it is hard to slow down. I am going to try very hard not to try to be everything to everyone as it is easy to get in that spiral when it comes to running a team. I want to have the best team I can have but I don’t want to compromise the game and friendships along the way. You have to step back and re-evaluate every now and then where you are at and where you wanna be.
Where do you see our sport in 5-10 years:
That is an absolute coin toss. I don’t see too many guys that are waiting in the wings to take teams over and continue a teams legacy’s. More guys are taking the easy road so I think there will be more local tourneys for a while. When the current generation of leaders are done with this game, it will be a skeleton of what is was. I see the masters taking off however, for the simple fact that the guys running the show and playing now will be moving on in droves and will not want the headache of the rest of the sport.
Misc:
I have enjoyed this sport more than I can put into words on here by any means. The friends and memories are priceless. To be able to be one of the “old guys” now and sit back and reminisce about the past with the “I remember when’s” has made all the travel and sacrifices worthwhile. I just hope there will be another generation of guys that will be as lucky as I was and can say the same thing in 15-20 years. |
