Sports Background:
I played football, basketball and baseball in high school for the mighty Centerville Elks. Centerville is known throughout Ohio as a "football factory." The small town 5 miles south of Dayton has produced recent Ohio State legends Kirk Herbstriet (ESPN), AJ Hawk (Packers), Mike
Nugent (Jets) and Nick Mangold (Jets). Continued my brief college baseball career at Sinclair C.C. in Dayton where I pitched for one year. I then FINALLY graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2005 (it took me 15 years!!!!).
Softball History: My father is Hall of Famer Dave Woolf. I was born in March of 1972 and
am sure by April of that year I was attending his softball games. I've been sitting in the dugouts of my dad's teams for as long as I can remember. I am proud to say that a Woolf has played in each of the 36 Dayton National Police Softball Tournaments.
My LE softball career began the day I was offered my first Police job in
1995. As shallow as it sounds, police softball was a BIG reason I wanted
to become a Police Officer. I was offered the job, drove directly home
and called John Sweeney, the coach of the Dayton Metro team. I was on
a police softball team before I even told my family I got the job.
I played on that Dayton Metro team until 2004 when the team folded.
In 2005 Terry Ables and I were picked up by the Columbus Police Softball
Club and that team has since morphed into the current Central Ohio
team.
Proudest Softball Moment: On the field -
Police Softball gets GREAT media coverage in Dayton because
of the tournament. In 1999 I was named the "Athlete of the
Week" in the local paper for my play in Dayton for the Nationals
and in Nashville for the Music City Classic. I went an absurd 31
for 35 with 23 HRs in Dayton and 27 for 29 in Nashville with 17
HRs. It was pretty cool for me because my wife (at the time)
was an All-American soccer player in high school and had also
been named an "Athlete of the Week."
Off the field -
Knowing that I contributed to the "Shevy Wright experience" in
Palm Springs. That was the neatest (can't think of a more
appropriate word) experience I have had associated with
softball. I was honored to be witness to it and a contributor.
Lowest Softball Moment: Having to live with the fact that it was my generation that let the
Dayton Metro team wither and die.
Future Personal Goals: I can now see the end of my playing career quickly approaching
and it KILLS me to know that I did not go to Florida with the
Columbus team that won Jacksonville in '05. I have several 5th
place finishes in Dayton and a 2nd place finish in Nashville, but I
want to play a role on a team that wins a "biggie." BAD!!!
Where do you see our sport in 5-10 years: I am 35 years old and have learned what I don't know. And what I don't know is where our LE softball circuit is going. I do believe that we will continue to see a reduction in teams, but I am not so sure that is a bad thing. There may be less teams now, but I think the competition has increased greatly. The days of teams traveling for just an out of town weekend of partying and drinking are over. Several years ago there were teams that really had no chance at all against the Jacksonvilles, New Yorks and Minnesotas. I think those days are gone. And I believe the guys on those teams will tell you that. There are very few gimme games left for even the powerhouses, if any. I can see a time in the not too distant future where there is only one "super team" per state. And I am an honest enough person to say that I am not near smart enough to say whether or not that is a good thing or bad.
I am willing to say that what Jeff and Del have done with this website is bring the two coasts much closer together and that can't be looked at as anything but positive. |
