Concord/OSS Softball Make It Two In A Row
by: Carl Hollywood Gaskins     May 05, 2008
1ST ANNUAL CHP CHOIR BOYS SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT Although it was called their 1st annual tourney, it ran more like their 25th. Combining great fields, free water and Gatorade drinks in the dugouts, and their well-known hospitality, the Choir Boys put on a spectacular first tournament. As smoothly as everything ran, you would have been hard-pressed to believe that they were still scrambling (because of teams dropping out at the last minute) to finalize balanced brackets and convenient game times for all teams. By Saturday morning however, everything was perfectly prepared and some great softball was ready to be played.

In Saturdays "Bracket A", Aftershock rolled through their division to take their bracket, and was seeded in the #3 spot to start Sunday's "A" Division playoffs. The talented Stanislaus team finished second in their bracket, and was seeded in "A"s #5 spot. The fiesty Santa Cruz team was able to fight off the Choir Boys for the third spot in their bracket and lock in the #9 spot in the "A" Division. The Choir Boys and Solano CHP headed for Sunday's "B" Division playoffs.

The "B Bracket" watched State Razed (who had just finished their own successful 1st Annual tournament) take the wnners spot in their bracket, and seed in "A" Divisions #2 spot. Sacramento SPS finished a solid second in the bracket, and was seeded as #6 in the "A" Division. The Concord Squad squeeked by both the Folsom J-Cats and Sac. Probation to take third in the bracket and the #7 spot in the "A" Division, sending both Folsom and Sac. Probation to the "B" Division playoffs.

The "C Bracket" was dominated by A-1 Towing/Hardcor, who took the #1 seed in Sundays "A" Division playoffs. Big Tone's Sacramento County squad solidified a second place finish in the bracket, and seeded in "A"s #4 spot. The tough DEA team held on to the third place in their bracket and took the #8 spot in "A" Division, while the Sierra Cartel and Yolo Sheriffs headed for Sundays "B" Divison playoffs. Seeing teams in the "B" Division like the Choir Boys, Folsom and Sac. Probation, who routinely roam the "A" Divisions in other tourneys, just shows you how much talent showed up for this event.

Sundays "B" Division started with Solano topping Yolo 14-13, and Folsom beating Sac. Probation 17-15. The Choir Boys then took it to Solano 22-2, while Folsom sent the Sierra Cartel team home with a 21-9 finish. In the Championship game, the Choir Boys (who had already lost 3 games on Saturday all by 1 run) were defeated by the Folsom J-Cats 13-12.

Sundays "A" Division began with a great brawl between the DEA and Santa Cruz, ending with a 25-23 win by DEA. Concord then faced State Razed, defeating them 17-2. The talent stacked Aftershock squad took on the always tough Sac. SPS, beating them by a final of 18-13. The Sacramento County Sheriffs then battled Stanislaus, and squeeked out a 14-13 win. The last of the winners bracket first round games had the talented Hardcor team handing the DEA squad a 25-23 loss. The winners bracket continued with Concord/OSS defeating Aftershock 32-6, and Sac. Sheriffs beating Hardcor by a final of 28-23. In the final winners bracket game, Concord/OSS and the Sac. Sheriffs battled back and forth, with Concord taking the win 18-11. In the losers bracket, State Razed sent Sac. SPS home with a 17-12 win. The DEA handled Stanislaus as we ll, sending DEA into round #3. The next round had Hardcor jumping on State Razed early, and ending their day with a 30-7 loss. Also heading home was Aftershock, as the DEA squad continued to roll with a 23-18 win. Down to the final four started with Hardcor finally ending DEA's day, sending them to a showdown with the Sacramento Sheriffs. Making up for their earlier loss to them, the Hardcor squad was able to overcome a late Sac. Sheriffs charge to advance to the championship game. The Hardcor squad, already having played 5 games, gave it all they had against the Concord boys. Concord's hot bats had not cooled off however during their break, and ended Hardcor's day with a 21-10 final.

Having the opportunity to socialize with virtually every team, the overall consensus was that this tourney was a huge success. The only issue that arose had to do with umpires (they only play ASA in that area) who had a tough time with consistency behind the plate. The Choir Boys have already solved that problem for next year, which only leads me to believe that next years tournament will have an even larger showing than this year. I want to congratulate Alan, Steve, Jimmy O., John and all the rest of the Choir Boys team for a spectacular first year, and am confident that this tourney will become a major event in years to come!
