This year’s tournament, 15 teams, was played on Friday and Saturday at Pierson Park in Wellington, Florida. Rocco’s host party was great as usual on Thursday night, he continues to be a great support for our profession as well as Kyle and his mother. Love you brother.
Elite 8 / John Scollo Memorial 2023
The opening ceremonies on Friday were well represented by county and city officials who are so accommodating and gracious with helping us with this event. The Major and Gold teams were pre-determined so it allowed teams to play everyone and even hit 12 without the risk of dropping down.
The 3 brackets were stacked as I normally stray from the rankings and place teams against teams that rarely get a chance to play each other. The one thing that is obvious through two tournaments this year is there is more parity in teams, teams are getting younger and more athletic and every game now is a battle.

After bracket play the top seeds in Major were Suffolk, Max Elite, and Miami Dawgs.
Just like last year, we had a game you thought was played in Colorado, with Miami 5-0 beating NFL 52-38. Miami 5-0, who had previously been looked at as a Gold team showed they have the talent to play with anyone and beat teams on a consistent basis. If beating NFL wasn’t enough,5-0 then beat Max Elite, placing the top two seeds in the loser bracket as Suffolk lost to eventual champs, TBL. TBL started their run as the 8th seed by beating last year’s champs Nassau, SFL, Suffolk and the Miami Dawgs.

SFL, lost to TBL 17-16 and then fought back through the loser’s bracket to meet TBL again for all the marbles. The one 10-minute rain storm of the weekend came through and rained out the championship game, crowning TBL a well-deserved Elite 8 / John Scollo Memorial title. Joel has got this ship headed in the right direction. One of the reasons I like the no state rule for MY tourney is seeing a team like Torch, with guys from all over or Lockdown in the past allowing guys to come who would never have the chance and enjoy this tourney.

In the Gold Division, for the 2nd straight year Ct Lawmen, was the #1 seed, heading into double elimination. An up and coming FLE team, ran by two great men, Larry and Jack, pulled a major upset by beating Ct. Law sending them to the loser’s bracket.

FLE waited while CT. Law righted the ship and beat Necessary Force and double dipped FLE to claim their 2nd straight Gold Elite 8 /John Scollo Memorial title.

Take away of the weekend, the Florida teams are looking more consistent than in years past, the top 4 this year consisted of 3 Florida teams and 2nd in the Gold.
The winners from both Divisions took home rings this year along with a nice plaque and bourbon bottles for MVPs. The prizes were the best ones yet.
