Great Lakes Capture the Magic in St. Louis
Champs, GLL
The 11th Annual St. Louis Bacon Ball Tournament was held Saturday August 6th, and amazingly we had a great day of weather, for this time of year. The tournament format was a double elimination bracket, with all 14 teams seeded according to the current PS rankings. The field of teams this year was stronger than any other year previous, with 9 of them being World Series Majors teams.
The homerun derby ran throughout most of the tournament and was sponsored by Castle Sports. It came down to Danny Fitton of NYPD Blues and Cody Haegelin of Texas Law. Fitton ended up just getting by Haegelin in the end to be named derby champ, but both walked away with something for their efforts from Castle Sports.

There were several tight games throughout the day decided by just a run or two and some big upsets, namely, Battle Born losing their first game of the tournament against Kentucky Blue and Midwest Heat squeaking by to knock NYPD Blues to the Southwest Airlines bracket. The first six teams that were eliminated from the double elimination bracket were moved to a separate bracket where they played for Southwest Airlines flight vouchers.

The Southwest Airlines bracket played out with NYPD Blues meeting Chicago Metro in the finals. It was a solid east coast matchup, with NYPD coming out on top to win the flights package.

The double elimination bracket played out with the defending St. Louis Bacon Ball Champions DEA Combo, making it to the Championship game, this time to face the undefeated Great Lakes Lawmen for the 2016 St. Louis Bacon Ball title. DEA came out with a big number early and forced an IF game, beating Great Lakes 19-6. In the IF game, Great Lakes secured home team and, in a back and forth game, outlasted DEA Combo 21-19. Kentucky Blue, formerly OH50, did a great job battling all day to take 3rd place, for the second consecutive year in St. Louis.

Overall, the tournament ran very smoothly, with the help of the staff at the Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex. There were several others who helped make this tournament a success, and who deserve a big thanks… Dennis, Liz, Rob & Lucy, Brett, Keith, Joel, Dan, Ian, and Haley. Also, thanks to all the coaches who brought your teams out to St. Louis and congrats to Great Lakes on a hard fought victory!
