Charles Garrett Memorial Outstanding Police Officer of the Community
Joseph Markulic is Named First Ever O.P.O.C. Award Winner!
Joe Markulic, Howell Township Police Department
Charles Garrett of Garrett Metal Detectors has always been a strong contributor and supporter of law enforcement. He recently passed and to honor his legacy Policesoftball.com in association with Garrett Metal Detectors have created a new award that focuses on police officers who make a positive impact on their community. We are proud to name our first ever winner, Sgt. Joe Markulic of the Howell Township Police Department in New Jersey.
Nominee: Joseph B. Markulic
Sergeant
Howell Township Police Department
New Jersey

Sgt. Markulic goes above and beyond in the community he serves. Not only does he conduct his normal patrol functions but he gets involved with the community and beyond. Since 2009 Sgt. Markulic has adopted a family for the Holiday season. He obtains a wish list of items that the family may need while looking further at the home to see what really could be used. After everything is prepared Sgt. Markulic and his co-workers deliver all the gifts on Christmas Eve.

Sgt. Markulic missed making a delivery in 2012 since he decided to assist local police, fire and EMS workers whose homes were damaged during Hurricane Sandy. He organized a fundraising drive called “Heroes Helping Heroes” and held a large scale concert where he was able to raise over $50,000 and distribute it to over 50 emergency workers.

After Hurricane Sandy, Sgt. Markulic organized with fellow policesoftball.com members and followers the delivery of appliances, furniture, food and other household items. Sgt. Markulic received donations from Michigan to Virginia. Sgt. Markulic even organized groups of volunteers to assist in the cleanup after the storm. One group took time out of their own busy schedules from Michigan.

Sgt. Markulic who is also the President of the Monmouth County Traffic Officers Association organizes a Christmas tree delivery to families who cannot afford one. He has been doing this since 2012.

Sgt. Markulic participates in the following:
Police Unity Tour -6 years
Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge -17 years
Special Olympics Torch Run -10 years

He also supports many of the local organizations that fundraise for cancer and rare children diseases.

Sgt. Markulic recently gathered up some help from a co-worker and his son to take down a jungle gym swing set from a family kind enough to donate to another family and reinstall it.

As you can see Sgt. Markulic is very worthy of this new award that Policesoftball.com will be presenting at this year’s World Series.
