by: John Staiger, Montgomery County Jul 11, 2008
The Shamrock Enforcers proved they are a team to look out for by taking the crown in Montgomery County. A good time was had by all and the tournament was completed despite the hot, humid weather and several thunderstorms. Bracket play started out as follows: In bracket 1 the Dirty Jersey boys went 3-0 and advanced as the number 1 seed. The Shamrock Enforcers and Secret Service both went 2-1 but only the Shamrock enforcers advanced to gold on run differential. Ocean State and Prince Georges County both finished 1-2 and Capital Police rounded out the bracket at 0-3.
In bracket 2 Maryland State Police, Tri-State Lawmen and Worchester all went 2-1 in the bracket with Worchester being the odd team out due to run differential. Worchester played strong beating MSP 22-21 however MSP batted around 3 times in the first inning against Charles County in their last game and never looked back adding to their impressive run differential for the day. The Virginia Beach Lawmen, Charles County and Baltimore County all finished at 1-2 in the bracket.
In bracket 3 DAP won the bracket finishing undefeated, followed by Capital City Lawmen who finished 2-1. New York Port Authority finished 3rd in the bracket followed by the host Montgomery County Police team.
In the final bracket of the day a strong Central New York team went undefeated and finished 1st in their bracket. The final game of the day decided who would be the number two seed in the bracket. Steel City and the Montgomery County Young Gunz needed eight innings to decide the game with Steel City winning in the bottom of the eighth with 2 outs. The Philly A’s rounded out the bracket.
On Sunday the gold division began with the Shamrock Enforcers beating DAP, Steel City taking down MSP, Central New York defeating Tri-State and the Capital Lawmen beating Dirty Jersey. The first round of the losers bracket had MSP sending DAP home and Dirty Jersey defeating Tri-State. In the winners bracket the Shamrock enforcers beat Steel City, and Central New York defeated Capital City. In the losers bracket MSP defeated Capital City, and Steel City defeated Dirty Jersey. MSP then avenged its earlier loss by batting around 3 times, once again, in the first inning putting up an impressive 26 runs in the inning against Steel City. On the winners side the Shamrock enforcers continued to roll taking down Central New York. MSP continued to stay hot beating Central New York 19-6 to make the final.
In the final MSP went out to a 20-6 lead in hopes of forcing the “if” game. MSP continued to lead going into the sixth up seven. In the final two innings Shamrock went to work and reversed the tables scoring 16 in the sixth to go up by 9. MSP would cut it to 5 but lost 34-29 in a hard fought battle. Danny Mercado took MVP honors for the champs.
The final 12 teams were left to fight it out in the silver. Secret Service took the silver division having to defeat a strong Baltimore County team in the “if” game to win the division. Virginia Beach was third in the division followed by Charles County. The Montgomery County Young Gunz and Worchester tied for fifth in the bracket and were followed by Capital Police, New York Port Authority, Philly A’s, Prince George’s County, Ocean State and the host Montgomery County Police team.
