Flip McGovern and Nate Baez Earn MVP Honors!!!
This years West Palm Beach Bacon Ball promised to be a great event. As always, Jack Olson and John Scollo were great hosts. The weather was just about perfect with only one 20 minute rain delay. The nightlife near the host hotel was a lot of fun and the caliber of teams that showed up made it one of the best tournaments of the year. John Scollo had 20 total teams and he did something unusual with the schedule that seemed to work out well for everyone. John took the 12 teams that regularly play on the Police softball circuit and grouped them together for pool play. John then took the 8 other teams and grouped them for pool play. The 12 team group was vying for the #1-12 seeds and the 8 team grouping was vying for the #13-20 seeds. This allowed for some great competition right from the get go and made for some very evenly matched games.
In pool play, Michigan looked like the team to beat as they scored two run rule victories over Buckeye Lawmen and Jacksonville PSC. Michigan was firing on all cylinders and looked early on to be the team to beat.
The Dirty Jersey Boyz drew a tough seed by taking on the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the West and East (the Alliance and NY Metro) in pool play. Although Dirty Jersey went 0-2, they pushed the Alliance throughout the game and came up just short at the end. Dirty Jersey also pushed Metro to the limit and the game went into extra innings where Metro pulled out a one run victory. The game was highlighted by the power hitting display of Donavan Delaney. In addition to his bat, Double D also displayed his arm by throwing a sizzling bullet from right field to the plate on the fly. (Future runners beware)
In another bracket, the Bluegrass Lawmen were rolling. They went 2-0 and had a very nice win against the NYPD Blues.
After some great pool play games, double elimination started. In double elimination the NYPD Blues went on a roll and beat BSO, Bluegrass, NYPD and the Buckeye Lawmen to make it to the winners bracket finals.
The Alliance beat Dirty Jersey, Jacksonville and Michigan to make it to the winners bracket finals. In the undefeated game Alliance beat the NYPD Blues by a small margin.
Jax. PSC beat Metro Blue, South Florida, and beat the Buckeye Lawmen.
NY Metro (who was sent to the losers bracket by the Buckeye Lawmen) beat Miami Red, Bluegrass, Michigan, Jacksonville and was ready to face the NYPD Blues.
The Buckeyes had rolled to victory against Metro Red 40+ and NY Metro but were sent to the losers bracket by the NYPD Blues. The Buckeyes faced Jax and in a very good game, were sent home.
Michigan who rolled to two mercy wins in pool play, beat Miami Metro Red, South Florida and then lost to Alliance to get sent to the losers bracket. In the loser bracket Michigan lost their next game to NY Metro.
Now three teams were left. The Alliance was sitting in the cat bird seat with the NYPD Blues and NY Metro playing to see who would come up from the losers bracket. This was a great game with many players/fans watching. Both teams looked great but the Metro bats were a little hotter and in the end, Metro bested their NY brethren.
This left NY Metro and the Alliance as the two teams left standing. Due to a scheduling issue, the Alliance had a plane to catch and both the Metro and Alliance teams agreed to be co-champions and split the points and prize money. These two teams have won 5 tournaments this year and have 7 top 3 finishes or better. After the points were settled in the Boombah Points Chase, NY Metro grabbed the top spot in the East and the Alliance is now sitting in second place due to a great showing by the Quake in Manteca.
