Policesoftball.Com is pleased to announce the formation of a new team that will be playing in the circuit this year, Team Vargas. The team is coached by veteran USBP Agent Dave Rodriguez who has previously been in a leadership role with other teams such as Nitro2Go, Southwest Syndicate and USBP Heat. According to Dave, the idea of putting Team Vargas together came late last year after a long time member of the USBP Heat passed away due to cancer.
Mario Vargas was one of the original members and loved to play every weekend. Mario decided to stop playing and concentrate on his daughters when he was diagnosed with cancer about 5 years ago.
Team Vargas consists of players from the Border Patrol and San Diego PD. They have veteran players like Ruben “Happy’ Moya, RC Martinez and Ivan Garcia who can provide some leadership and they have young bucks like Juan Sanchez, Jorge Sarquis, Cory Higbee, David Turner and Garret Kizinkiewicz. Although this is their first year playing together, it’s not their first year playing softball. Most of them are new to the LEO circuit and after playing in the DEA Kickoff tourney, they are eager to play again. They were impressive in the Kickoff as they advanced to the A-Flight and finished tied for 9th place ahead of some established heavyweight contenders. If they have a weakness it is their lack of exposure to USSSA style pitching, but the youngsters are working on their game and should be dialed in soon. When asked to describe the talent level of the team, Dave answered, “Just wait and see for yourself, we will surprise many teams this year.”
Team Vargas plans to play in 4 or 5 tourneys this season with the hope that they can gain some experience and earn an invite to the World Series in Las Vegas.
