Quake Goes Back to Back in Manteca
by: Carl Hollywood Gaskins     Jun 10, 2008
There was a little "edge" to this years Concord/OSS Softball tournament, as several teams came in to the Big League Dreams-Manteca complex looking to solidify their spot in the 2008 Police Softball World Series. Many of the teams were "on the cusp" of making it into the top 15 West Coast spots, and new they had to bring their A-game to gather enough points to make it in.

Opening it up to 18 A-Division spots made the round robin a little longer than most teams would have liked, but it also gave players a chance to test their skills at the new hitting contest set-up this year, as well as the always eventful homerun contest. The hitting contest saw Franco from Solano CHP take 1st, Terry from the Sac. Razorbacks take 2nd, and Ronnie from Quake take 3rd. The homerun contest ended with Meat from the Sac. Razorbacks taking 1st, Paul from Direct Impact took 2nd, and Frank from Santa Cruz edging out Jose from the Sac. Razorbacks for 3rd place.

The Round Robin ended as follows:
A-DIVISION; 1- Concord/OSS 2- Choir Boys 3- Sac. Razorbacks 4- Quake 5- Sac. PD
6- Folsom/Sac 7- Stanislaus 8- State Razed 9- Direct Impact 10- Aftershock 11- Hardcor
12- RSD Red 13- Dirty Berdoo 14- LA Lawmen 15- Salinas PD 16- Vegas Heat 17- DEA
18- Santa Cruz
B-DIVISION; 1- Gladiators 2- Sac. Probation 3- SF Sheriffs 4- Redding/Shasta 5- Solano CHP
6- Richmond 7- Sierra Cartel 8- Co Co CHP 9- Oakland PD

It was obvious right from the start of the playoffs however that your position coming into the playoffs would have very little to do with how you were going to finish. Several of those teams in the hunt for those last spots in the top 15 came out firing, and knocked out several of the teams who had already earned enough points to solidify their W.S. berths. Other playoff games matched up two teams both in the hunt for a W.S. spot, so teams were using everything in their arsenols to pull out a victory.

First to go in the A-Division were Salinas PD and Vegas Heat. Both Concord/OSS and the Sac. Razorbacks, who had rolled through their round robin games, left their bats and gloves at the earlier games and were also eliminated. Also leaving early were solid teams like the Folsom/Sac J-Cats and RSD Red, who were hurting for points to make it into the Big Show. Both Sac. PD and Santa Cruz started off hot, but found themselves heading for the parking lot by the third round. Along with them went Dirty Berdoo and Stanislaus, who were also hunting for points.

Left in the final top 8 of the A-Division were State Razed and the Choir Boys, who ended up finishing tied for 7th place. Going deep into the playoffs were the LA Lawmen and Direct Impact, who were finally eliminated tied for 5th. In a low scoring affair, Aftershock took out DEA 11-8, leaving DEA with a 4th place finish. The Aftershock team them met up with Quake, who had just lost a great game against A-1 Towing/Hardcor, who was now the only undefeated team. In a 22-18 brawl, the Quake were able to hold off Aftershock, leaving them with a 3rd place finish. The Quake then returned for a battle agains Hardcor, having to double-dip them in order to take home the championship. Unfortunately for A-1 Towings Hardcor, they too had lost their bats before the final games were to be played. Hardcor couldn't get anything going in either of the final two games, as Quake rolled past them to take both games and a first place finish.

The B-Division playoffs started with a no-show by the SF Sheriffs, leaving them a 9th place finish. Finishing 8th was Solano CHP, and tied for 6th place were Co Co CHP and Oakland PD. Redding/Shast Heat left with a 5th place finish, leaving only 4 teams to battle for the crown. Sierra held off a hard charging Richmond team, beating them 14-13 and leaving Richmond in 4th place. Sierra then took on the Gladiators, who send Sierra home in third place with a 17-8 victory. The DVI Gladiators then met up with the undefeated Sac. Probation team, needing 2 straight victories for the championship. It was not to be however, as Sac. Probation continued to roll, beating the Gladiators 20-5 and taking home the first place hardware.

Congratulations to both Quake and Sac. Probation for their victories. The top 3 teams from each division received Glass-etched trophies, with the winners also receiving championship t-shirts. We at Concord/OSS hope that everyone had a great time at these fabulous Manteca fields, and hope to accommodate even more teams next year. Also a thanks goes out to Jeff and Del from So-Cal Alliance for making this both a Gold Series event as well as the final tournament for World Series points.
