A great weekend of softball kicks off the West Coast LEO season!
Gold Glove Player Nate Baez and MVP Mike Snyder have some fun after the tourney.
The weekend of February 12/13, 2011 marked the new season for the West teams at the annual DEA Kickoff in Chino Hills, Ca. Typically this event draws all the top teams from the West as many teams are anxious to show off their new uniforms, debut their new players or simply for an opportunity to play ball after a long off-season. This year was no different as 16 of the West top 25 along with the teams currently ranked 1-7 were in attendance. A total of 24 teams were divided into 8 brackets for round robin/seeding purposes. After pool play, teams were seeded 1, 2 or 3 based on their results. The top 2 teams in each bracket advanced to the A-Flight double elimination playoffs while the 3rd seeded team moved on to the B-Flight double elimination playoffs.
The round robin played out as most would have expected with teams such as: Alliance, HardCor, Sin City, Quake, LAPD Blue, DEA Combo, and NorCal Chior Boys inking the top seed in their respective brackets.
In one of the most anticipated games, the upstart West Coast Police Softball Combo/WC PSC announced their presence to police softball with an impressive victory over the perennial West powerhouse the West Coast Aftershock. WC PSC was led at the plate and on the field by middle infielder Juan Galvan who is rapidly becoming one of the game’s best all around players. Meanwhile former Indianapolis Colts defensive back Scott Thomas locked down centerfield with blazing speed and his cannon arm. The win propelled WC PSC to the top seed in their bracket. Aftershock had no problem shaking off the defeat as they went on to down the police games gold medal winning LASD Warpigs to advance to the A-Flight playoffs.
In other round robin action, the re-charged Red Republic lost two heartbreakers to LAPD Blue and the surprising South Bay Outlaws and got bumped into the B-Flight. That was bad news for those teams in the B-Flight because Red is clearly an A-Flight caliber team. The Outlaws were one of the biggest surprises as they re-formed after a year hiatus and upset the Red and then almost pulled a shocker against LAPD Blue. It was evident that the Outlaws were taking 2011 seriously. Another team many thought would struggle, Nitro2Go looked better than ever. Under the leadership of Lyle Reyes the team reloaded with young talent and are once again a top flight team. They too advanced to the A-Flight. Southwest Elite lost three starters in the off-season and their rising star Danny Ruiz was unavailable due to a family emergency, but that didn’t stop Elite from also advancing to the A-Flight. Other teams rounding out the A-Flight were SoCal Riot, Lockdown, Team Vargas and Excessive Force.
With the tournament now separated into A and B Flights for the playoffs the intensity was ramped up. The playoffs began on Saturday afternoon and went into Saturday evening. Unfortunately, some teams would not be returning on Sunday as they were eliminated early into the contest.
In the B Flight, the brand new CenCal based TCB Softball Club introduced themselves to the circuit by promptly sweeping through the playoffs unbeaten. They advanced to the championship game and would need to be double dipped (beaten twice in a row), because they were only one win away from winning their first ps.com championship. Their chariot turned into a pumpkin on Sunday afternoon when the Red Republic marched through the loser bracket to double dip TCB and deny them of their first ps.com championship. Whatever the case, TCB certainly showed the circuit what they are capable of and will undoubtedly challenge for a top 15 ranking all year. Meanwhile, it was just another day at the office for the Red Republic as the veteran squad added yet another trophy to their collective mantles.
In the A-Flight, the final four unbeaten teams were among four of the best in the nation. To get to the undefeated game on Sunday morning the SoCal Alliance defeated another former World Series champ, the Cal Quake. Meanwhile the #1 ranked West team Sin City needed late inning heroics to knock off 09 World Series champs, HardCor. The stage was set for an undefeated game between SoCal and Sin City on Sunday morning.
All other A-Flight teams had either been eliminated or had a loss on their record so it was win or go home for the remaining teams. The LAPD Blue and DEA Combo both played strong softball all weekend but when the dust settled they came in tied for 5th. The Quake were an inch away (literally) from advancing but HardCor held on in the last inning to eliminate the Quake. Quake finished in 4th.
Meanwhile in the undefeated game, the SoCal Alliance continued to roll by knocking Sin City into the loser bracket. The Alliance advanced to the championship game and would need to be double-dipped since they were unbeaten.
HardCor avenged their Saturday loss to Sin City which placed HardCor in the championship game against familiar rivals, SoCal Alliance. Sin City ended up finishing in 3rd place.
In the championship game the Alliance poured it on with power and speed to jump out to an early lead. HardCor couldn’t get firing on all cylinders while the Alliance continued to play inspired softball. The SoCal Alliance won the game, and claimed the first championship of the West season at the DEA Kickoff.
