At the conclusion of a three game bracket on Saturday, bracket winners were Nassau PBA, 21st Century Knights and Team Jersey in the Top Gun Division and the MTA Police in the Competitive. The opening game on Sunday morning brought two big upsets as the Port Authority Police team defeated Tri-State Law in extra innings and the NYC Hounds handily defeated the defending champion Nassau PBA.
After defeating a scrappy CT Law team, Team Jersey went on to defeat NYC Hounds by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh on a two out blast by Anthony Sanchez. At the same time, the 21st Century Knights defeated Port Authority.
This set up a back & forth game between Team Jersey and the 21st Century Knights, which the Knights prevailed by two runs.
Although knocked into the loser's bracket early, everyone at the tournament knew that Nassau PBA would not go quietly. They defeated
Ct Law, Port Authority, and avenged their early morning loss by eliminating the NYC Hounds, who were coming off an impressive win over Tri-State.
The 90+ degree heat seemed to be taking it's toll on the remaining teams, as the game bewteen Team Jersey and Nassau PBA saw players becoming dehydrated and running for shade. Team Jersey played as they were the fresher of the two teams and run ruled the defending champions.
This set up a rematch of an earlier game between Team Jersey and 21st Century Knights.
Although running on fumes, Team Jersey showed the heart and fortitude that make a champion as they went on to double dip the Knights in two hotly contested games to win the 17th Annual N.Y. Law Enforcers Softball tournament.
Congratulations to Team Jersey and the all-tournament team named by coach Sammy of John Erven, Dave Monasara, Branden Stacy and Dave Massi. A special tournament congrats goes out to MVP Anthony "Chez" Sanchez, who although was visibly ill during innings in the championship game, continued to play at the highest level to earn the well deserved honor.
