PS.com Projects the East Top Ten Finish in the Boombah Points Chase
Over the next 10 days, Policesoftball.com will preview all the main teams in police softball and we will also give our projections on how the Boombah Points Chase will shake out once the 2008 season is over. Some of the information is merely speculation and/or conjecture but much of it came from reliable sources. Remember, the Boombah Points Chase does not necessarily determine the best team. What is does do is reward teams for how they play in Gold and Silver division tournaments. If you would like to comment on this story or give us your picks, please go to the message board titled "Policesoftball.com Season Preview" We hope you enjoy the preview and we want to thank all the teams who assisted us with information. Now, on to the preview!!!
JACKSONVILLE POLICE SOFTBALL CLUB/3N2: The JPSC is arguably the best team in the nation over the last five years and we at PoliceSoftball.com don’t see anything in 2008 that will change that. The team is loaded at every position and is once again the #1 ranked team going into the East season. This team has the hardest hitters 1-10 of any team in the nation and they walk out on the field expecting to win. The team is led by Robbie Freitas who is one of the better player/coaches in the game and a former winner of the PoliceSoftball.com Coach of the Year award. Alan Westfal was one of the best players in the East last season and the Sterling Hts. MVP had some serious consideration for East Coast Player of the Year. Add Hall of Famer Dennis Leonard, the Cullen brothers and Scott Bridges to the mix and this team is as balanced as any in the nation. We don’t see too many changes from them for 2008 but then again they don’t need any upgrades. While other teams are scrambling to add talent, the only change Jax will be making is they will be sporting the 08 3n2 shoe line so they should be a little quicker this year. 2008 OUTLOOK: Anything less than a #1 finish will surprise people. PROJECTED FINISH: 1
MICHIGAN LAWMEN: 2008 should be an exciting year for the Lawmen. 2008 brings in some old faces along with new ones from some other Michigan teams. The Michigan Lawmen feel they are a family with values and that is what they want to show for 2008. Missing from the 2007 squad for most of the season, we expect to see Jeff “Biscuit” Graus, HR Derby King Scott Czopek, and Chris Killop among others back wearing blue again. PoliceSoftball.com Hall of Famer Mike McDowell, AKA “Pops” will be at the helm and managing the Lawmen and will bring knowledge, dedication and experience to the position. Assisting him will be veteran Stan “Chilly” Chiles. Chiles is a very calming influence and will be a great help to McDowell. The Lawmen have some great sponsors lined up for 2008 and they along with a dedicated team will make sure the Lawmen have the resources to be successful. Offensively and defensively this team will be strong and defensively they will be able to do the things needed to contend for #1. 2008 OUTLOOK: This team has had its share of movement over the last 12 months, but no matter the player situation, this team delivers. In the last three years the team has not finished lower than #5 in the rankings and have made the final 4 in 2 out of the last 3 World Series. It appears the Lawmen are starting out 2008 with clear direction and that direction may just lead them to #1 when the season shakes out. PROJECTED FINISH: 2
MINNESOTA LAWMEN: Last year the Lawmen from the North Star state added a couple of pieces and looked like the dominant team they were a few years ago. With plenty of tools to work with, the Lawmen didn’t add any significant pieces in the off season. This team tore through the Dayton field last year undefeated and showed that when they are playing at the top of their game, they are one of the elite teams in police softball. This year the Lawmen plan on playing in Dayton, Sterling and the World Series. If funds allow, the Lawmen may add an additional tournament to their slate. This team thrives on power and hard nosed softball and their #3 finish in the rankings show what this team can do when they play like they are capable of. 2008 OUTLOOK: Coached by Hall of Famer Mike Reuvers and led on the field by the nails style of play of Bobby Lambert, this team is primed for a run at #1. PROJECTED FINISH: 3
NY METRO: Metro is arguably the most successful franchise in law enforcement softball history. 2007 was no different, and although they weren’t top dog in the rankings and suffered a let down in the World Series they still had a season that most teams would dream of having. They are loaded with talented veterans who have a simple recipe for success. TEAM FIRST. There is no room for individuals on the Metro roster and they live the famous quote, “Individually we are one drop. Together we are an ocean.” This team boasts numerous hall of famers including a former PoliceSoftball.com Player of the Year so no matter what, they will always be in the mix for a shot at #1. One question mark was last year’s involvement of Coach/sponsor Roger “The Hammer” Akiki who was MIA. Rumors were swirling whether Roger would be with the club in 2008 and at press time we still do not know. PoliceSoftball.com attempted contact with the Hammer but his people told our people he was vacationing in Mexico. We suspect “Vacationing” was a metaphor and the Hammer was actually scouting talent at the police softball Mexican winter leagues. 2008 OUTLOOK: We did not receive any word of any new signings but then again Metro is so loaded there really isn’t any room for anyone else. They may actually lose some talent this year as the Suffolk connection has split (on good terms) and will play in the open division under their own flag. We don’t see much of a shift in the rankings one way or another for the Metro. Count on them going deep in every tournament and winning a few along the way. PROJECTED FINISH: 4
BUCKEYE LAWMEN: This team is an off shoot of the Tri-County Lawmen who went 1-4 in the 2005 World Series and 0-4 in the 2006 World Series. So with their 1-8 All-Time World Series record, what do they do? Beat some of the best teams in the nation and finish second out of forty five teams in the 2007 World Series. The team lost Chris “Cabeza” Killop back to Michigan Lawmen but it looks like they kept power hitting Randy Thivierge at catcher. This team’s World Series performance showed their #3 finish at 2007 Dayton wasn’t a fluke. Beating Jacksonville twice in a year is also quite the accomplishment given that JPSC only lost 4 games on the season. PoliceSoftball.com named Buckeye coaches Chris Moore and Tom Siedlecki as East Coast Coaches of the Year on day one of the World Series and their performance later in the tournament solidified their selection and proved PoliceSoftball.com to be master prognosticators of the future. The Buckeye’s showed some 5 man infield in 2007 but with any team trying it for the first time, they weren’t totally comfortable with it. Expect them to use it more in 2008 and we suspect by the end of the season, it will be one of their mainstays. This team finished #2 in the East rankings of 2007 and showed they are on par with the best teams in the state of Ohio. 2008 OUTLOOK: By now this team should realize they are no longer Cinderella and should walk out on the field expecting to win. If they have turned the corner and are doing that, expect big things from them in 2008. PROJECTED FINISH: 5
OHIO LAWMEN: The Ohio Lawmen have been one of the best teams in the sport during the last three years. Over that time they have a World Series win to go along with a #2 and #3 finish in the PoliceSoftball.com rankings. Last year the Ohio Lawmen bulked up with a little Michigan flavor and were looked at by many as one of the favorites to win the World Series and finish #1 in the rankings. Well there is a reason you play the game on the field and not on paper as the Lawmen slipped and finished ninth in the World Series while dropping to #6 in the rankings. Part of this reason for the lower than expected ranking was they only played in 3 recognized ranking tournaments last year but if you ask veteran insiders, they will admit the team lacked the fire they had in years past. This should change in 2008 as the Ohio Lawmen plan on being one of the top dogs when things shake out by years end. The Ohio Lawmen lost PoliceSoftball.com Home Run King Scott Czopek back to the Michigan Lawmen but they picked up Michigan veterans Jerry Schornack and Mike Frazier. Their pick ups also include Eric Harris who could be one of their franchise players. The Lawmen pride themselves on having good chemistry and in fighting has always been kept to a minimum on this team. This team is led by Brad Borowy and he keeps the team pointed in the right direction. They also have superstar Rob “Lil Country” Menke, Sean “Tunnel Rat” Francis and Brian “Baby” Keys who will be lighting it up for them this season. Add some phantom sightings of Mongo (who is rumored to be cross sworn as a police officer by mid-season) and this team won’t lack for ability. The Lawmen plan to play in Jax, VA Beach, Anne Arundel, Cinci, the World Series and may make a trip out West early on to try to grab 12 Brett Helmer bats and some Boombah Points in the West Covina Bring Ur Real Skilz tournament. Dayton is also on the list if they can find some fill ins for their two state players and Menke who is on the black list. Off the field the Lawmen have Anchor Tool & Die (the Pfaff Brothers, Jeff and Fred) who will be assisting them financially and have been one of their strongest supporters in past years. 2008 OUTLOOK: There is a reason this team has twice finished in the top 3 of the rankings and has also won a World Series. This team is strong up and down the line up and has no real weakness. Picking up Jerry Schornack will give this team a heady pitcher and strong bat to go to when needed and will help them to make another great run. Will the run end in #1? They may win the Series but not playing in Dayton and Sterling will hurt them in the points chase since they won’t pick up those Gold level points. PROJECTED FINISH: 6
NYPD BLUES: 2007 was clearly a rebuilding year for the Blues. They lost several talented starters to the Shields and filled those spots with young talented players who will become the future of the team. Management had hoped these younger players would mature quickly and be able to compete at the same level as previous years but that did not pan out. Although it was time for a youth movement, there were still growing pains. The high point of the season was their World Series performance where they knocked off Minnesota and a handful of other top teams to post their best WS finish to date. This was a clear sign that the team had the talent and now the maturity to compete at the level they EXPECT to compete at. Solidifying this team are many great players but the cornerstone is 2007 East Coast Player of the Year James Ruocchio. This is the player all other teams notice and 2008 will be no different. Coach Rick Terelli is one of the best leaders in the game and like Steve Merchant on the West Coast, he lives for his team. You will not find a better friend and provider to his team than Rick. 2008 OUTLOOK: The Blues have strong and dedicated leaders to compliment their young/athletic players. That alone is a recipe for success. Look for team leaders to hold their players to a high standard. Dedication and commitment will be MANDATORY. If everyone is on the same page, look out. They will be a machine. If not, look for changes once again. This is a no-nonsense organization and you are expected to get on the train or get run over by it! PROJECTED FINISH: 7
MIAMI METRO RED: When Policesoftball.com first went public, the Miami-Red team was rarely mentioned as being a force in the East. By the end of our inaugural year, Miami had placed its stamp firmly on the foreheads of all doubters. This is a team that consistently plays well in the World Series and has the PoliceSoftball.com feels is the best infield in the game. There is talk that the team will see less of the services of Tim “The Godfather” Grundmann and Eric Campbell and that can only hurt any team. Even if this is true, coach Mike Bracci has some deep talent reserves in the state of Florida and we expect to see him reload rather than rebuild. This team finished in the top 10 the last two years in a row and with some breaks, they can be a top 5 team. 2008 OUTLOOK: With the new point system in place which handsomely rewards teams that play well in the season finale, you can expect the Red to be in the mix the Boombah Points chase championship. They have a good balance of table setters and bombers coupled with stellar defense. The only question mark will be the pitching position which might be in limbo due to the anticipated retirement of the Godfather. Two of the major points tourneys (Sterling and the WS) are USSSA so they will need to find a pitcher who can assume that role. Coach Bracci prides his team on performance but he also takes pride in how they conduct themselves on and off the field. Bracci wants to compete at the highest level against law enforcements officers from across the nation and with this team he can do that. Bracci said last years World Series losses to the two teams who finished #1 and #2 might be a moral victory to some teams, it was not something his team was satisfied with. Coach Bracci feels his team will better hit the longball in timely situations this year and if they can do that, they will be a lot tougher team to beat. For 2008, Miami intends on attending Vegas Bacon Ball, Jacksonville, West Palm Bacon Ball, the Florida Police & Fire Games, Sterling Heights and the 2008 Police World Series. No matter what happens on the field, Miami expects to make a positive impact on not only the sport, but our profession. PROJECTED FINISH: 8
THE DIRTY JERSEY BOYZ: The last 3 years have the Boyz finishing #22, #17 AND #17 IN THE East. This should change this year as the Boyz should be a much improved team in 2008 with the addition of some very good players including DAP’s most feared power hitter Donavan “Double D” Delaney and DAP’s former coach Hector Cuadrado. The teaming of Double D and Herman Colbert will arguably give the Boyz one of the best power hitting tandems in the game. Couple that with the Boyz making more of the Boombah Points Chase tournaments this year, they should be primed for a run at the top 10. For 2008, the Dirty Jersey Boyz are looking at stops in Virginia Beach, West Palm Beach, West Point, Anne Arundel, NY Bacon Ball and the World Series. The Boyz also have a great sponsor in Bill McNamara of MacScreenprint.com and he has been a huge help for them. 2008 OUTLOOK: SLEEPER ALERT! This team could jump several place in our projected rankings. The Boyz have all the pieces to make a run. They have the talent to win and financial backing. The big question will be if they have the confidence in themselves to have a bad inning and recover. PROJECTED FINISH: 9
MARYLAND STATE POLICE: Last season the MSP team cracked the top 10 for the first time in the 3 year history of the rankings. The other two years they were just on the outside looking in. This is a team that looks to be on the verge of a breakout season. They have always done well on big stages with their 7th and 5 the place finishes in Dayton and the Rick Hall Memorial tourneys last year respectively. Two years ago the team struggled at the World Series but they turned it on last year finishing just out of the top 10. Kevin Ringold seems to be one of the steady leaders on the team with Brian Smith being the leader who keeps the team loose. 2008 OUTLOOK: PoliceSoftball.com doesn’t have any intelligence on any changes for 2008 but this teams’ stock is on the rise and should again be in the top 10 once 2008 shakes out. PROJECTED FINISH: 10
