The NYPD Blues hosted their 1st Annual 911 Commemorative Softball Tournament this past weekend. The tournament was to honor the fallen heroes of 911 and it's 10th year anniversary. The tournament was held at two locations Saturday at Moriches Complex with all state of the art astro turf fields and the weather could not have been any more accommodating. The second day at Medford Complex. The skies were blue and the temperature was in the 80's. This tournament fielded only 9 teams from the East but it featured nine BEASTS from the EAST.
The pool play finished with the NYPD Blues and Great Lakes grabbing the two top spots which gave them a buy starting the double elimination round. Prior to the double elimination there a ceremony which feature the color guard NYPD Pipes and drums and the first pitch thrown out by the family of fallen hero NYPD Detective Joseph Vigiano's widow P.O. Kathy Vigiano and their two sons Joseph and John.
The National Anthem was sung by Michael Tirelli who left players and all in attendance with chills throughout their bodies. The roll call honoring the 23 NYPD officers was read by PBA Trustee Daniel Tirelli and SBA Vice President Robert Ganley. The 37 Port Authority names were read by Detective Shawn Fitzpatrick from Port Authority P.D. There were a host of local politicans also present. Brookhaven Town Supervisor spoke on behalf of the other politicans present and honored the heroes of 911 and then announced PLAY BALL.
The tournament was under way. Rounding out the bracket standings were as follows Shamrock, South Florida, Minnesota, N.Y. Metro, Suffolk, Jax and DBQ setting up our double elimination. In the double elimination round JAX beat DBQ So. Florida beat Minnesota The NYPD Blues beat JAX, Suffolk beat The Great Lakes, Shamrock beat N.Y. Metro Then the Blues beat So. Florida, Shamrock beat Suffolk setting up the winners bracket final on Sunday morning featuring NYPD Blues VS Shamrock. Sunday paired Minnesota beating JAX in a last inning win. Great Lakes beating N.Y. Metro Eliminating Metro and JAX . Minnesota then beat Suffolk and Great Lakes beat So. Florida. The NYPD Blues then beat Shamrock in the winners bracket final putting the Blues in the catbird seat the Blues needing to be double dipped.
The Great Lakes then beat Minnesota coming through the loser bracket now to face powerhouse Shamrock. Shamrock beat Great Lakes which set up the Finals NYPD Blues VS Shamrock. In the first game Shamrock beat the Blues now setting up the rubber match for the title. The Blues came out hitting and they put 10 runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back winning the First Annual 911 Tournament. This game also featured the longest hit softball ever hit on Long Island by Shamrock stud Double D.
The MVP was the NYPD Blues shortstop Kevin Wahlig who hit 700 and didnot make a single error the entire weekend, and certainly was a human highlight reel. All Tournament selections were Casey Crandall, Butch Crozier, Brad Beamer
