The Season Officially Kicks off at Vegas Bacon Ball
by: PoliceSoftball.com     Apr 03, 2008
The Alliance goes 9-1 to grab first tournament victory of the season
Vegas Bacon officially kicked off the police softball circuit this year with 24 very good teams coming together in the desert to see who would grab that first tourney win of the year. The tourney was set up in 6 brackets of four teams each. Bracket play seeded into double elimination which guaranteed every team 5 games. After pool play was finished, only three teams were undefeated which we think is a sign that parity is almost upon us. NY Metro rolled through their bracket with the biggest margin of victory. Hard-Cor looked impressive as usual and the Alliance was the third team to round out the undefeated trio. All the other 21 teams had at least one loss after pool play was finished. Double elimination started on Saturday and when the dust settled, the four still undefeated teams were NY Metro, California Quake, A-1 Towing/Hard-Cor and the Alliance/KME/Easton team. NY Metro stayed hot and took down the Quake. The Alliance and Hard-Cor battled back and forth but in the end the Alliance came out on top. This set up a match between two ends of the country with SoCal and NY going at it.
Going into this game, the Alliance and Metro had split the four times they had previously played. This game looked to be a battle as Metro is one of the most storied teams in police softball history and the Alliance was riding a 22 game winning streak. Although the game looked to be a battle on paper, Metro showed why they are Metro and run ruled the Alliance.

At this point, all teams were now in the losers bracket except for NY Metro.

In the losers bracket first round, RSO sent home Venom. MCB sent home Iowa. DEA sent home SAC PD. Dirty Dirty sent home Concord. State Razed sent home Texas. Miami Blue sent home Miami Red. East Coast Lawmen sent home Vegas Enforcers.

In round two of the losers bracket:

MCB sent home RSO Red. Sin City sent home DEA. Dirty Dirty sent home State Razed. East Coast Lawmen sent home Miami Blue.

In round three of the losers bracket, MCB sent home the Aftershock. Sin City sent home Michigan Lawmen. LAPD Blue sent home the Dirty Dirty and Direct Impact sent home the East Coast Lawmen.

In round four of the losers bracket, Hard-Cor sent home Sin City. LAPD Blue sent home Direct Impact.

In round five of the losers bracket, the Quake sent home LAPD.

Now the only teams left in the losers bracket were Quake, Hard-Cor and the Alliance. Quake and Hard-Cor went at it with the Quake coming out strong and sending them home. In the Quake-Alliance game, the Quake looked like they were going to roll when they plated 11 in the first inning and then blanked the Alliance in their half of the inning. The Alliance battled back and ultimately won a squeaker by 2 runs.

This set up Metro and Alliance with the Alliance having to double dip Metro. Game 1 went back forth and was eventually tied in the 7th inning. At one point in the seventh inning, the Alliance filled the bases with two outs. Ryan Coe who had gone 4 for 4 with three homeruns came up and was intentionally walked to push ahead the go ahead run. Metro then got the third out and went into their half of the seventh needing one to tie and two to win. Metro had their chances with two quick base runners but couldn’t push across a run and the Alliance won game 1.

In Game 2 the Alliance bats came alive behind Pete Semelsberger who went 4-4 with three homeruns. When the game was over, the Alliance run ruled Metro and took home the Bacon Ball Vegas crown for the second consecutive year.

MVP for the tournament was:

Ryan Coe of the SoCal Alliance who had an OBP of .889 for the tourney (40 for 45) and an OBP of .958 in five games against Hard-Cor, Quake and NY Metro on Sunday.

Alliance All-Tourney players are:

Alfonso Trujillo who displayed stellar defense, hit over .600 and showed he has a warriors heart by playing through injury the entire tournament.

Pete Semelsberger who had a .718 OBP for the tournament including a .789 OBP on Sunday. In the Championship game, Pete went 4 for 4 with three homeruns.

Tim Morris who nearly hit .700 on the tourney and made some great plays at home to save runs throughout the tournament.

NY Metro All tourney players are:

Tommy Wiggin who hit a sizzling .871 and had 6 HRs.

Anthony Iadevio who hit .810 with 3 HRs.

Tim Conroy who hit .800 with a whopping 10 HRs. Tim was a monster for Metro and every team was aware of his place in the batting order.

California Quake All tourney players are:

Guillermo Guerra earned all tourney honors hitting 771 with timely homeruns and high intensity.

Keith Benjamin played an incredible infield and hit well into the 700s. As always Benji brought more fire than hell can hold and was incredibly timely when the Quake needed him most.

Thomas Larocque once again did it all. He hit in the 700s and played a stellar outfield, he performed coaching duties and an incredible amount of off-field necessities. Tommy’s heart bled Quake green and led us to the doorstep of the championship round.

Bacon Ball also had a HR Derby which used a “hit one and move on” format. In the derby, the final two standing were Will Manion of the Cal. Quake and Steve Showers of the Motor City Blues. In the end, Steve won the derby and earned a new bat in the process.
