There will be a change in the 2008 Sportsman of the Year Award
by: Keith Benjamin/PoliceSoftball.com     Nov 24, 2007
The Award will be named after everyone's little hero
Today our little hero Shevy Wright was laid to rest. Shevy's body will no longer be with us but his spirit will last for years to come. Shevy showed us the power of laughter, love and hope and he embodied the values we look for in the PoliceSoftball.com Sportsman of the Year Award. Because Shevy typified the ideals of being a good sportsman, the award will forever be known as the “Shevy Wright Sportsman of the Year Award”.
Shevy won over a lot of people with his courage during the 2007 Police Softball World Series, as he walked to the pitcher’s mound and threw a perfect strike to kick off the East Coast vs West Coast All Star Game. It is only fitting that the Award be named after him and presented on the same mound he threw his strike.

Shevy was diagnosed with an inoperable cancerous brain tumor in Dec. 06 and doctors projected that his life span would be no more than 2 years. Shevy’s lifelong dream was to be a police officer and more importantly put bad guys in jail. On July 18th, 2007 Shevy became an honorary police officer for the Chandler, Arizona Police Department complete with a badge pinning ceremony that included Shevy taking the police officer oath. Shevy finished off the day flying in a helicopter, working with the SWAT team, attending a staff meeting, receiving firearms training, and completing a 5 hour ridealong.

Shevy continued to hang out at the police department, and completed more ridealongs during the summer months before returning back to school. He spoke regularly of wanting to be able to drive his own police car and catch bad guys. He even talked about how he would hit the brakes real hard if the bad guys continued to talk badly of police officers while they were riding in the back of his police vehicle.

Shevy attended the Police Softball World Series in Oct. 07 and while receiving a standing ovation from approx. 1500 people, he spoke happily of the amount of people that were in attendance by saying,” wow, that’s awesome.” Shevy loved being around police officers, and enjoyed the one on one attention he received from cops all across the Country that were in attendance at the softball world series. Shevy had a dream of being a police officer, and he epitomized that dream by always telling people, “ I want to be a cop to put bad guys in jail.”

Shevy lost his battle with cancer on Nov. 17th, 2007 and died in his sleep a peaceful death. He spent one of his last days at the Chandler Police Department being pushed in his wheelchair talking to all of his friends and fellow police officers. Shevy will long be remembered for his courage, pride and dedication to wanting to become a police officer. He never complained about his illness, and despite his limitations from the cancer towards the end of his life, he still was able to make a positive impact on the lives of all who got to know him.

Rest in Peace Shevy and good luck in your new patrol assignment working directly for GOD.
