Over the past 6 years the World Series has evolved into a bigger event than we first imagined, and in order to continue to produce a high quality event it is unfortunately necessary to limit the number of participating teams. As always we want every team to get a fair and enjoyable experience, which will continue to include 2 round robin/seeding games and then a blind-draw double elimination playoff format. Based on field availability we have determined our cap will be 39 teams in the Platinum division and 15 teams in the Gold division (total of 54 teams). Schedules for both divisions will be intertwined and will span over the same three day period. This will ensure that everyone can enjoy the same experience. The ONLY thing differentiating the two divisions will be the opponents. The championship games for both divisions will be played on late Sunday afternoon/early evening.
The Platinum division will be comprised of the typical large state, mega-combo, and/or teams that typically perform well in the World Series. The Gold division will be for teams that typically go 0-4 or 1-3 in the World Series, but it will still be highly competitive because many high quality teams have losing overall WS records. Ps.Com will allow teams to state a preference but ultimately Ps.Com management will have final say-so based on the overall needs of the event. Obviously based on the division sizes (39/15) we will be more likely to bump a “wobbler” team up rather than down. If for some reason the numbers do not justify two divisions we will combine teams into one larger division.
Our goal has always been to draw the top law enforcement teams in the nation and that will continue to be our focus. We believe it is important for the best travel teams from participating states to come together at the World Series. To that end, we have allotted a certain number of pre-determined berths per state (see the list below). We based those berths on past performance/history and/or previous participation in the World Series. We recognize that not all teams listed will attend the 2010 event for whatever reason so their spots will become “at large” berths. We have also awarded berths to all past World Series Champions, since winning the event means they have earned their place in future World Series. (see list below). The SMWS winners, B&G won a spot at the 2009 WS (see list below).
Since there are over 50 teams in the California we will be allotting numerous berths to California teams. We decided the top 3 pre-determined berths for California based teams will be based on the 2009 World Series finish minus the earned spots by previous WS winners Quake, Alliance and HardCor. (see list below).
The other California berths (qualification berths) are divided evenly between a North Regional event and a South Regional event. Both will be wide open to teams from all over but we chose one north and one south simply due to geography. Each tournament will have 6 berths that will be awarded to the highest finishing team that has not already qualified (example: If Quake wins a tournament, the berth would go to the team that finishes second. If that team already has a berth it will drop down to third place and so on…). Star6/Sacramento on June 26/27 and Summer Classic/Riverside on July 31/Aug 1 will be the qualifying events and will each have 6 berths at each event (see list below). In addition to following the Min Eligibility Standards, those two tournaments will follow some type of roster rule similar to what the World Series & West Palm Beach already have in place (details later). Additionally these will both be provided bats tournaments. We believe teams should earn berths with their own rosters so implementing a roster rule for these events will help to ensure this occurs.
