North Florida Showdown = New National Powerhouse
John Scollo West Palm Beach Bacon Ball Recap
There is a new sheriff in town, North Florida Lawmen
The weather was perfect and the atmosphere was great. the fields were in the best shape in years, and competition was fierce. In the end the final two teams, North Florida and the Shamrocks were left standing. North Florida was undefeated and Shamrocks had to double dip them to win the title. In the first game, Shamrocks pulled out a tough victory, they played great all day, and North Florida didn't want to have to play them twice.

Mid-Atlantic Kicks of Season with an Orlando Championship
Mid-Atlantic Lawmen UNDEFEATED
Once again we kicked off 2017 on the East Coast with the Brian Aselton Memorial Tournament in Kissimmee Florida. I have to start by saying, many teams came up to me over the weekend thanking me for having this tournament but in all reality , I cant express how fortunate I feel to be able to host this long running event. That cold wet Saturday evening shift back in 01/23/99 when Brian's life was so tragically taken from us 18 years ago, still seems like yesterday. So I am the one that needs to be thanking each and every one of you who participated, and in turn helps me to be able to keep Brian's name alive.

World Series XII is the Biggest World Series Ever
Team Texas Pops the Corks!
The 12th Annual Police Softball World Series was held at the Big League Dreams facility in Las Vegas, Nevada on the 2nd weekend of October, 2016. The theme of the event was the “changing of the guard” as several established teams were feeling the heat of the young guns breathing down their necks all season. The youth movement was far more prevalent this year than in the past so of course, ps.com decided to market that angle. It was no longer about East vs. West, as the cyber-friendships created by social media killed that rivalry. What it didn’t kill was the inevitable changing of the guard. Older, established teams were classified as being Legends of the Old Guard, while the newer teams were simply referred to as the New World Order.

We had 19 powerhouse teams from around the country come pay tribute to John. The ceremony was great, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office honor guard presented the colors and Johns jersey was presented to Johns son Kyle. PoliceSoftball.com West Conference Championship Recap
Alliance player Danny Wells is safe at home against the NY Hounds.
The West Conference Championship theme was “Back to the Future” as the tournament was held at the Big League Dreams facility in Cathedral City (Palm Springs), Ca. The venue was the site of the first 5 Police Softball World Series tournaments before that event moved to its current location in Las Vegas. This facility is the flagship Big League Dreams park and used to host some of California’s largest police softball tournaments. It has been 7 years since a major police tournament was held here, so Policesoftball.com decided to visit our roots and take a walk back through time.

3N2/D2E popping bottles celebration
The 3N2/D2E Lawmen arrived in Las Vegas with a purpose! Earlier in the year one of their teammates, John Scollo took his own life for reasons we will never know. If anything, it confirmed what most police officers already know and that is the stresses of the profession are often internalized which is believed to be why suicide is a common cause of death for police officers. The 3N2/D2E Lawmen had been in Police Softball World Series championship game a few short years ago and finished as runner’s up, but on this weekend they were determined to win the World Championship to celebrate John’s life. *

Through his leadership he quickly established the Missouri Lawmen as a Majors Division powerhouse and they have steadily climbed the ladder going from a ranking of 15th in 2012, to 9th in 2013, to 4th in 2014 and they currently sit at 6th going into the World Series this year.

The Ohio Player is one of the best athletes in our game
Butch Castor Named to All-Decade Team
Butch with a perfect connection.
We have an apology to make. We accidentally omitted a player from our All-Dacade team. We have no excuse, it is clearly an error on our part. Although we do not have an excuse, we have a explanation. When we first started pouring over our history to come up with this team, our concept was to name a player of the decade. A list was made and then we scrapped that idea and went with an All-Decade team. As we transferred names one got lost in the shuffle and we did not catch it in our final list.

Tim Ramsey manages the NorCal Elite team and he is one of the busiest and most active managers on the circuit. Not only does he lead from the dugout, he also leads from the field as a very deceptive USSSA pitcher for the team.

Three More Players Added to the All-Decade Team
The next additions to the All-Decade Team come from two powerhouse states in police softball. First is Florida where we be naming Hall of Famer Paul Cullen and Mike Ogliaruso to the team. Both Paul and Mike have been huge players for their respective teams over the last decade but they play very different games. Paul is the more fiery of the two and plays with great intensity. Mike is much more laid back (at times) and lets the game come to him more. Both players are exceptional athletes and have played sports at a high level all of their lives. Both now play for 3N2/D2E Lawmen and we expect both of these players to have a major impact on their teams success at World Series X. It takes a team effort to win the WS but we believe if these two players perform at a high level, 3N2/D2E has a great chance to win it all this year. (But no pressure gentlemen)

Two NY Metro Legends Are Added to the PoliceSoftball.com Team of the Decade
Shown is Flip McGovern getting it done for NY Metro
Today marks the 13th anniversary of the Attacks on 9-11. Although these attacks were felt all across our great nation, no where were they felt more than New York City. It is this reason why today, we are naming two great NY Metro ball players to the PoliceSoftball.com All-Decade Team. NY Metro was one of the most storied teams in the history of police softball and they were still at the top of their game at the beginning of the PoliceSoftball.com decade. Fast forward 10 years, NY Metro no longer exists and the baton has been handed to the NYPD Blues, who is arguably the best police team in the country. One constant in this decade of change, is that Dickie Malek and Flip McGovern are still wearing an NY uniform and they are still playing superb ball. Even though they have changed teams, they have not forgotten how to win as the NYPD Blues are currently riding a 20 game/3 tournament win streak.

Terry, will many times sponsor/coach several different teams and is takes care of his players as well as any manager can.

The Minnesota Lawmen Check in for the All-Decade Team
Here is Ken Fry robbing someone of a home run during World Series play.
Our next two players on the All-Decade Team are total gamers that play the game the way it is supposed to be played. They will be frequently seen running hard, hitting the ball with authority and focused on winning. They are emotional players that seem to will their team to success.

This Edition of our All-Decade Team includes a Tale of Two Scott's.
Much like the dynamic duo on the Alliance, we have another duo playing for the Great Lakes Lawmen. Making up this duo we have Scott Czopek and Scott Waxweiler. Both of these players had a major impact on their teams and our sport during the last decade of PoliceSoftball.com. Both have won a World Series championship, and have been instrumental to their teams success and, we would argue, have been instrumental in their teams existence.

Borowy, Tirelli and Bracci named to All-Decade team.
Mike Bracci shown playing in the Master Division at World Series VII
Much of our All-Decade team has focused on players but this time we are focusing on team leaders. The guys we want piloting the ship to make sure it is ready for anything. Make no mistake about it, players are important to our sport, but we think true leaders are what is important. Alexander the Great is quoted as saying, “That it is better to be an army of sheep led by a lion than an army of lions led by a sheep. We believe that to be true and today, we give you some of our lions.

Lake Tahoe was glistening and the Casinos were full of celebrities and hot nightlife. The 2014 Miken Lake Tahoe Classic was held July 18th and 19th. California weather was in full effect. The days were filled with sunny blue skies but the afternoons brought warm wet rain. The skies parted around Zephyr Field and maintained that true field of dreams atmosphere. The California side school fields were not so lucky. Thanks to ground crews though, games were pushed back for a short amount of time.

2014 East Conference Hall of Fame Inductees Announced
This year there were 15 highly qualified East Coast Nominees who were nominated by their peers in PS.COM. It truly should be considered an “honor” just being nominated for the PS.COM Hall of Fame. When the committee discusses the nominees we take into consideration several key factors before we vote. These factors are longevity in Police Softball, playing ability, coaching/managing/sponsoring a team, being a tournament director, professionalism on and off the field and if they truly made a positive impact or were a game changer within the Police Softball community.

SoCal Alliance and LA Lawmen are the victors
West Conference Championship Blow by Blow Coverage Here!
Major Division MVP - Eric Harryman
THE WEST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP - Mid-May is a busy time for the police softball circuit as two of the biggest tournaments in the nation are held on opposite ends of the country. The Bash at the Beach/East Conference Championship is held in Virginia Beach and on the other coast, the West Conference Championship is held at the Big League Dreams facility in Chino Hills (SoCal). The ECC drew plenty of teams, but the numbers were down significantly in California. The WCC typically draws 24+ teams, but for a variety of reasons only 16 came out to test their skills against some of the toughest competition in the circuit. The event featured 6 Majors teams and 10 Gold teams and they were divided into 6 round robin brackets. Gold teams were spotted 7 runs against the Majors teams which created some interesting results. One of the more exciting matchups was Showtime nipping the LA Lawmen by 1 run. Another tight one was the DEA Combo vs. CenCal Connection game that ended in a draw.

DEA COMBO
The West Conference kicked off the official start to the 2014 season with the annual DEA Kickoff in Chino Hills, Ca. Twenty-one teams came out of hibernation to debut their new uniforms, and in many cases also new players. Since California decided not to recognize winter this year, the conditions were perfect for softball, sunny and 80 degrees with very little wind. Although attendance at many tournaments has dropped the past few years, the Kickoff has held steady at 20+ teams for the past several years. The tournament was once again sponsored by Easton in a provided bat format.

POLICESOFTBALL.COM TO NAME ALL-DECADE TEAM!
Who will make our All-Decade Team? Check back on 1-1-14 to see our first names.
This upcoming year marks the tenth year of Policesoftball.com. As a way to commemorate our tenth year, we will be naming the Policesoftball.com All-Decade team which will consist of players and managers. Each month beginning in January, we will name 2-3 people who we feel had a dominate decade. As with all things, timing is very important to be considered for this list. If someone was a great veteran player at the beginning of the last decade but did not sustain a level of greatness throughout it, then most likely they will be left off this list. If someone was a hot shot newcomer but started his police softball career near the middle or end of the last decade, then they may not be on this list either due to not playing the entire decade. As with all lists, there will be disagreements as to who should and should not be on this list. That is what makes lists so much fun.

71 teams come to Las vegas looking for a World Series Title
Chicago Metro shows the joy of winning their first ever World Series title.
Big League Dreams Las Vegas played host to the Police Softball World Series which drew 71 law enforcement teams, with 1000+ players from over 30 states. The word “World” in World Series was appropriate in that, there were three Canadian teams participating; Toronto Police Softball, Prince Albert Police and the Regina Cyclones. Early arrivals were treated to a catered player’s reception at the Golden Nugget Hotel hosted by Hall of Famer Terry Dugan and his new Virginia based Lockdown Sports Gear company. Easton Sports with Brett Helmer and Miken with Denny Crine supplied all the bats for the tournament. The provided bat format has become very popular as there was no specter of juiced bats looming over the teams. It was a level playing field for all the competitors as games would be won and lost based only on talent and execution.

The Blues, led by Jimmy Gnew, are favored to win World Series IX
Jimmy Gnew Named East Conference Player of the Year
Jimmy Gnew leads the #1 Ranked NYPD Blues into World Series IX.
We typically get year end award nominations from team managers, compare them against each other, talk to some well informed people, look at what kind of year the team is having, compare that against what we know and what we think we know, and ultimately we name our year end award winners. This year the process was a little different. Yes we received numerous nominations but one name kept coming up over and over and it came from numerous teams.

Frank and Showtime are ready to do some damage at World Series IX
Frank Terronez is our West Conference Player of the Year.
Frank is shown crushing a ball at the Vegas Big League Dream facility.
The California Showtime team is relatively new to police softball having made their debut last year, but their players are veterans of the game and know how to win. This was evident at World Series VIII when this first year team shot past numerous established teams to grab a top 5 finish against the best in the nation.

Matt is one of the rare players where we received numerous nominations from different teams. Some of these nominations were for player of the year which is a testament to how much people value his abilities and style of play. Matt is the centerfielder for the OH5O team and although he is a great hitter who can hit for power and average, people feel he truly separates himself by his outstanding play in centerfield.

Bryan Schmidt Named West Conference Defensive Player of the Year
The defensive Schmidt is also a big threat at the plate and he was in strong consideration for our Player of the Year Award.
When it comes to defense, HardCor attracts it like no other team in the nation. This is only the sixth year this award has been in effect and four of the winners has played for HardCor at one time or another. This year it is Bryan Schmidt bringing home the hardware. Schmidt plays shortstop for HardCor who is one of the top police teams in the nation. Hardcor won World Series V and they come into World Series IX as one of the favorites to reach the final game. At World Series V HardCor was known as a complete team with lockdown defense. This year is no different. Leading that defense is Bryan "Schmitty" Schmidt.

Suffolk County Police Memorial Fund has been a great sponsor for many years for the Suffolk County Lawmen. The Fund was established in 1972 after the tragic shooting death of Patrolman George Frees in April of 1971. It’s primary purpose was to provide financial assistance for continuing educational purposes to the children of Suffolk County Police Officers who have died in the line of duty.
